LISLE, Ill. Dec. 8, 2025 — KONE, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry whose products move over 2 billion people daily, has won 1st place in the Escalators, Modernization category for Elevator World’s 2026 Project of the Year contest for its work on the Stamford Transportation Center (STC).
This project, done in conjunction with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), encompassed replacing 17 heavy-duty public transit escalators via the KONE EcoMod™ modernization solution. This unique KONE product allowed CTDOT to maintain the escalators’ existing trusses, providing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for the State of Connecticut.
Beyond these savings, the most vital component of this remarkable project was the efficiency of installation. STC serves over 23,000 commuters daily, acting as a hub for bus and train networks spanning the entire state and even into New York City. Thanks to the meticulous planning and diligent work of our KONE frontline teams, this project was completed with minimal disruptions, allowing this vital public transit artery to remain open for the duration of the modernization.
The exemplary work our team completed on this project, along with this award, serves as a powerful testament to what we at KONE can achieve when we work with our values of Care, Customer, Collaboration and Courage. Additionally, this win showcases our unique products and capabilities, as well as our position as industry leaders in modernization.
