A Legacy of Craftsmanship in Escalator Manufacturing

After over 31 years of dedicated service, Coal Valley employee, Dave Dilley will be retiring soon. His journey with KONE has been marked by complex problem-solving, expert craftmanship and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Dave's role at the Coal Valley escalator manufacturing facility has been nothing short of remarkable. As the truss assembler lead, he has worked with all the electrical components of escalators, wiring them, performing safety checks, and ensuring the integrity of every part. Unlike many modern factories, the assembly of escalators at KONE is a meticulous, hand-built process where each piece is crafted with precision and care.

Quality is a value Dave shares with KONE, which has been the cornerstone of his work professionally and personally. Dave and his wife, Angela, started Dilley’s Woodcraft which specializes in 3D laser engraving and cutting on wood. What started as a hobby, has now grown into a thriving business. “From my first days, I learned that KONE is completely committed to quality,” said Dave. “I applied that same dedication to quality in my woodworking business.”

A collaborative and supportive environment

Dave's role as a union steward with International Machinists Union Local 1191 further highlights his commitment to fostering a positive and productive workplace. “I’ve represented people on the shop floor for the last eight years and it’s been good,” said Dave. “It’s nice to see the union and company working together. We get so much more accomplished that way.”

Dave attributes the leadership and culture at KONE as a key reason for what has made his long tenure so enjoyable. As a team leader in Coal Valley, he is responsible for teaching others, which allows him to pass along his extensive expertise and commitment to quality craftsmanship to the next generation. Fostering this collaborative and supportive work environment has contributed to the success of our manufacturing in Coal Valley, as well as making KONE a great place to work.

As Dave transitions into retirement, he is excited to focus more on Dilley’s Woodcraft. “My goal is to make it an ongoing family business,” said Dave. “It’s all run by family now, including our three sons and other relatives. I’m teaching them about our family business.” Dave's leadership and commitment to quality will undoubtedly continue to shine in this new chapter. Dave's retirement marks the end of an era at KONE, but his legacy of dedication, craftsmanship, and quality will continue to inspire his colleagues.
