It was a great day to discuss smart cities Monday in Chicago. At the 2017 Smart Cities Summit, experts from across the ecosystem came together to discuss the next stages of urban development and our very own Jon Barr was there as well to discuss how the vertical commute fits into smart cities.

The audience at the Smart Cities Summit included a mixture of representatives from technology providers, city officials, transportation companies and engineering/construction companies – all of which contribute to what smart cities look like today and where they are going in the future.

KONE offered an interesting perspective to the conversation, shedding light on the importance of the vertical commute that takes place across cities everyday and the technologies that help to improve urban people flow.

There are two megatrends that impact KONE’s business environment: urbanization and technological disruption. Combined with the acceleration of digitalization, these two trends are changing the way buildings are being designed, built and managed. During Jon’s presentation he talked specifically about the four elements of smart buildings that impact how we approach the development and maintenance of buildings that fit into this vast, new ecosystem of smart cities.

Jon elaborated on KONE’s important partnership with IBM and what that means for the management of smart buildings and lobby’s as it pertains to elevators and people flow. KONE’s application of IBM Watson™ IoT to collect and store data from millions of elevators and escalators will provide deep insights and analytics around people flow and enables 24/7 Connected services.

KONE is excited to continue providing thought leadership in conferences focused on smart cities and smart building as our own smart building strategy continues to develop. Stay tuned to our social channels for future event updates!
