LISLE, Ill. Jan. 12, 2016 – KONE, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, was recently recognized with top honors in Elevator World magazine’s “Project of the Year” contest in the category of escalator modernization for its project at the New York State Capitol.
The award winning project, completed in 2014, features two escalator modernizations in the historic state capitol. The KONE EcoMod™ solution was chosen for the modernization, which enabled a customized approach to preserve the historical integrity of the building while introducing new escalator technology. The KONE EcoMod allowed the existing trusses to remain, which minimized disruption and potential damage to the building, while saving costs. To improve energy efficiency, the new escalators include a “sleep mode” feature which slows the escalator speed when no passenger traffic is detected. This feature helps reduce energy consumption and wear on escalator components.
New York’s State Capital is a registered National Historic Landmark, which required the project to comply with Historic Landmark code. In addition to modernization of the escalators, the project required repair and replacement of much of the escalator lobby in order to restore it to its original state. KONE operated as the prime contractor, coordinating all other sub-contractors on a strict timetable that ensured early project completion in four months.
“KONE is very proud to be recognized yet again with an Elevator World ‘Project of the Year’ award,” said Larry Wash, executive vice president of KONE Americas. “This award is a validation of our category leading innovations and another example of the excellent service KONE provides when executing demanding projects for our customers.”
This is KONE’s tenth overall Project of the Year award win since 2005 and the fifth consecutive win for the KONE EcoMod solution. For more than a decade, Elevator World has recognized projects that highlight innovative design, special applications or unique problem-solving solutions in vertical, horizontal or inclined transportation. In order to be selected as a winner, each project is reviewed by a distinguished panel of industry specialists and judged on innovation, originality and creativity, as well as installation methods and techniques.
